How to Needle Felt a Perfect Cube

In this tutorial, I'll show you step-by-step how to use wool roving to create a firm, well-shaped wool cube — a fundamental skill for any needle felting beginner. Let's get started!
Step 1: Tightly Roll the Wool Roving
First, take a piece of wool roving and roll it up tightly into a rectangular or block-like shape. Use one hand to press down on the wool while the other hand folds the outer edges inward. Try to keep the shape compact and slightly squared off — the tighter it is, the faster it will felt later.
Step 2: Secure the Wool
Once the wool is tightly shaped, hold down the end where the wool finishes wrapping. Take out your felting needle and start felting the end first. This helps secure the wool and prevents it from unraveling when you let go.
Step 3: Build and Define the Cube Shape
Continue felting the wool while gently rotating it. Focus on felting all the flat surfaces and gently shaping the edges to form a cube. Be mindful to maintain the straight lines and corners. Stay patient and consistently felt all sides to create an even, solid structure.
Step 4: Check the Felting Progress
After some time, gently press the wool cube with your fingers. If it holds its shape firmly and doesn't easily deform, the felting process is almost complete. The cube should feel dense but still have a slight springiness.
Step 5: Final Touches
Finally, switch to a fine needle and carefully felt the surface to smooth out any visible holes or stray fibers. You can also trim loose fibers with scissors to clean up the cube’s edges and sharpen the corners.
And there you have it — a beautiful, firm wool cube ready for your next needle felting project!
