DIY Needle Felted Mushroom Tutorial
Maria CallaryShare
Create your own charming porcini mushroom with this step-by-step needle felting guide. This project is perfect for nature lovers, DIY enthusiasts, and felt art beginners!
🍄 Step 1: Making the Mushroom Cap Base
- Prepare some core wool as shown.
- Roll the wool strip into a round shape and lightly fix it using a felting needle.
- Use your thumb to press down the center of the circle to form a slight dent.
- Cover the convex surface of the round shape with wool batt.
- Use the needle to stab at an angle towards the center until it forms the desired shape.
🍄 Step 2: Making the Mushroom Stem Base
- Prepare more core wool strips.
- Roll the wool into a cylinder and lightly fix the shape with a felting needle.
- Wrap additional wool around the cylinder multiple times—more on the thicker areas, less on the thinner parts—to shape it organically.
- Use the felting needle to firmly shape the stem.
🎨 Step 3: Coloring the Mushroom Base
- Prepare both the cap and stem bases.
- Take white wool and evenly layer it over the entire surface, felting until firm.
- Apply light yellow wool: cover the entire cap (including the indented underside) and add a small amount to the top of the stem as an accent. Felt in place.
- Add orange wool to the top of the mushroom cap, avoiding the indented underside. Don't cover it too evenly—let some yellow show through to create natural texture and color depth.
- Attach the cap to the stem and fix it securely using the felting needle.
- Use a small amount of brown wool at the base of the stem to create a realistic root and soil effect.
- Do a final surface check. Use your needle to stab down any loose wool fibers.
- If any fuzz remains obvious, gently trim it with scissors.
🎉 And You're Done!
